5 reasons to try a triathlon

A1 is perfect for ambitious beginners – middle distance route in the beautiful Kurortny district far away from intensive road traffic and exhaust fumes will make your first race very comfortable.

On July, 5th there will be the strongest athletes from Russia and all over the world, but the points will be scored in different age groups, so you have an opportunity to show the best result in your age group. Have you been on the fence wondering whether triathlons are for you? Here are five reasons to give tri's a try:

It's more fun than one sport alone

You'd like to get in shape, but what if you don't want to do the same thing day in and day out? Triathlons combine three sports: often running, biking and swimming.

"What people find is they get into triathlons for the cross training, and they find as a side benefit that their running might be better, their biking might be better," said Cindy Erickson, coach of the Playmakers triathlon team.

"I wanted a new challenge, new things to learn and, well, someone challenged me to give the whole triathlon a try," said Lisa Williams, a member of the Playmakers team. "I still find more things to learn."

There are lots of different options

There are several different triathlon distances to choose – sprint (500 m swim, 16 km bike and 5 km run), an Olympic distance (1,000 m swim, 40 km bike and 10 km run), half iron distance (1,9 km swim, 90 km bike and 21,1 km run) and legendary Ironman distance (3,86 km swim, 180 km bike and 42,2 km run) – main aim of all triathletes.

A1 TRIATHLON distance is half iron – from one hand, it’s a serious challenge and a chance to show what you are able to accomplish, and be proud of it. From the other hand, comprehensive training will allow beginners to cover a half of the most difficult distance. By the way, on July 5th A1 TRIATHLON participants will join para athlete Vladimir Ryabokon, who will showcase that there are no limits for triathletes.

On top of that, on July, 4th on the registration day there will be kids race “Fun Race” – so that triathlon may become your family leisure activity.

You can do it on a budget

Here's what you need to get started: a swimsuit, goggles, bike, helmet and running shoes. You don't need to go out and buy an expensive bike or a wetsuit right away. People generally will decide if they want to go further and get a better bike or a wetsuit.

As other triathletes upgrade their equipment, they might be looking to sell their old equipment, so Erickson said there are usually lots of opportunities to get a good second-hand deal.

You can train with friends

It’s always much more interesting to train with friends. No matter who you race with, it's easier to cover distance with friends. As a bonus you’ll meet a lot of like-minded people that will expand the circle of your friends.

"My No. 1 reason for getting started was the desire to challenge myself to do something that seemed beyond ability," Erickson said. "My No. 1 reason for sticking with it? I fell in love with the sport and the people who do it."

If you are not sure that you are not prepared yet to cover the whole half iron distance, you may form a team up to three people and take part in the team competition choosing only one discipline you’re up for.
